Amitabh Bachchan's Golden Run 1973-1988

There might be an never-ending debate on how perhaps the Movie business has changed in the last 30 odd years. Actors are doing increasingly lesser movies(though this trend started in the 2000′s only),increase in other mediums of entertainment, and so on.

On the other hand there have been booms too for the industry with Music(in 90′s) , Sattellite/Cable(2000′s) providing a very good avenue for Movie Revenue thus helping a lot in the movie’s recovery.

Also can be said that modes of promotions has also increased by leaps and bounds. But leaving the above behind, and going movie to movie, Amitabh Bachchan hit an extreme purple patch for almost 15-16 years between 1973-88.

The Innings is interesting for the amount of movies done and the success rate achieved.Infact of the 63 movies Bachchan did in that period only 7 movies faced monetary losses of any kinds, thus a loss making movie used to an Event for Amitabh Bachchan.

Also, Amitabh Bachchan had atleast 1 hit a year for 14 straight years(1973-86).

Take a look.

36 ALL INDIA HITS(From 1973-88)

For Fairness purpose its important to highlight the not so successfull periods of Bachchan’s Career.

1969-72

This Period is the start of the Career of Big B, he mostly struggled around for few years before breaking big time in Zanjeer. The notable movies of this time are Saat Hindustani, Anand and Bombay to Goa.

1 Saat Hindustani 1969 – Flop
2 Anand 1970 – AA
3 Reshma Aur Shera 1971 – Flop
4 Pyar Ki Kahani 1971 – Flop
5 Parwana 1971 – Flop
6 Bombay To Goa 1971 – BB
7 Bansi Birju 1972 – Flop
8 Ek Nazar 1972 – Flop
9 Sanjog 1972 – Flop
10 Raaste Ka Pathar 1972 – Flop

1989-92

This Period Signifies the return of Big B from the political Arena back to movie business, again here he didnt find the same success as he did in this prime. Notable movies are Agneepath,Hum and Aaj Ka Arjun.

1 Toofan 1989 – B
2 Jaadugar 1989 – Flop
3 Main Azaad Hoon 1989 – Flop
4 Agneepath 1990 – B
5 Aaj Ka Arjun 1990 7,00,00,000 AA*
6 Hum 1991 8,00,00,000 AA*
7 Ajooba 1991 – Flop
8 Indrajeet 1991 – Flop
9 Akayla 1991 – Flop
10 Khuda Gawah 1992 – B
11 Insaaniyat 1994 – B

Since 1997 Amitabh Bachchan has starred and been successfull in uncountable number of movies, though most have been in character role capacity thus cant be counted(in this context that is), though he has again had Pivotal roles in movies like Paa,Black,Cheeni Kum and Khakee but such movies wont be 10% of his movies since 2000 and definitely dont echo back at the glorious run of 1973-88.

    2. Completely wrong, Mr. Basheer! Kaalia and Shahenshah were superhits. Nastik was a decent hit and Pukaar was average. Your use of the word "super flop" to (wrongly) describe some of the movies clearly indicates that you are expressing your own opinions rather than facts.

  6. I must congratulate you, because there are very mistakes. Manzil of 1979 was place in Flop category where as Jurmana was placed in Semi-Hit, Above Averege category by Trade Journals. Remember Hrishikesh Mukherjee's BO success record was amazing. Thats why he was always blue-eyed boy of distributors. Even Zanjeer was not Blockbuster but it was Big Hit. Trade Publications introduced A11 i.e. Blockbuster category from Bobby i.e. same year. Roti kapda aur makaan was A11 i.e. Blockbuster, but you have placed both Zanjeer and Roti kapda aur makaan in same category. Unfortunately Trade Publications Placed even Sholay in just A11 category. On which 1 Trade Pundit remarked that Sholay should have been A several times 1 because it was Biggest Hit even in the history of Indian Cinema

  20. No doubt the period from 1973 to 1988 was golden period for the megastar. Overall only less than 10 odd films of his were flops at box office from his debut till 1994 as even the films which initially flopped in his earlier innings till 1973 later on recovered their cost & even made profits in their reruns post 1973. The films namely Faraar, Alaap, Jadugar, Main Azaad Hoon, Ajooba & Indrajeet were flops in real sense his career till 1994.The movie Agnipath which could not break even on its releae in 1990 was 10th highest money grosser of the year but was a flop though it had grossed Rs. 80 lacs per territory on average which even a blockbuster film managed to with difficulty in those times. It was declared a flop because it being a Bachchan movie was sold at very huge price which it could not manage to recover on its 1st release. Movie Toofan 0f 1989 was an above average business wise contrary t common perception of it being a flop. Yes in the period from 1988 to 1994 Bachchan films could not manage to do gr8 business with few exceptions as expected from a Bachchan movie; it was more because of lacklustre content & poor quality of the movies. The megastar still had the unparelled fan following & pull at the box office. The movie Insaniyat released in 1994 had witnessed the best opening moneywise till that period though film could not ultimately manage to do good business thanks to its poor quality & lack of content. Bachalchan phenomenon continued to rule the film industry right up to the mid 1990s in spite of very few releases in the period. The popular movie magazine Filmfare had declared Sanjay Dutt as Numero Uno-1993 with Anil Kapoor, Sunny Deol etc. among the top ten based on the opinion of the top distributors, exhibitors and film pundits of the time; But all these experts were unanimous that if there was any star who was at the top slot it was still Bachchan who had announced temporary sabbatical from the movies. According these movie business watchers, Bachchan was the only star who could sell a movie just on his name, the others were successful yes but their success was not to their sole credit. The other popular magazine named Movie put Bachchan at no.1 spot right up to 1997 based on the poles it used to conduct. It was only in 1998 when Bachchan was pushed to 2nd spot thanks to debacle of his much awaited comeback movie Mrityudaata in 1997 which beacause of its poor content & quality could not meet the sky high expectations of cinegoers. Then there was Major Saab with Bachchan & Ajay Devgan in lead which managed to break even followed by Bade Miyan Chote Miyan with Bachchan & Govinda which turned out t b a superhot film. In 2000 he appeared in Mohabbatein with SRK which gave a new dimension & new lease of life to Bachchan Phenomena. For nearly up to 2010 Bachchan was still considered among top five to 10 stars having very good pull at box office though because of age he no longer was the main leading man in the most. Still he gave some big solo hits like Baghbaan, Bootnath, Budha Hoga Tera Baap & Bootnath returns along with some multistarrer hits like KSKG, Waqt- the race against time, Khaaki, Sarkar, Kaante etc. Lately too he has been giving gr8 movies like Piku, Pink, 102 Not out, Badla etc. though the Khans & other like Akshay, Ajay etc. give much bigger hits & Bachchan because of his age is not able to manage the same pull in solo lead as these comparatively young stars. The fact that Bachchan still manages to give big solo hits in spite of age related handicaps (which restricts range of roles & characters) is unparelled & even at this time he may probably find place among the top 10 to 15 stars for his box office pull. Overall he still is the most popular superstar & the greatest actor on scene in indian cinema.

  21. Any Flop Movie of BB is better than any super hit movie of today's "so called stars". He is ... He was... And he will always be the God of the Industry.. Anyone with negative thoughts should not publish anything here. Before commenting go and watch "Majboor", "Do Anjaane" and "Kala Patthar" all three are different types and was not blockbusters but these movies are better than todays 100cr movies. After watching this if you want to know more names then message me here...👍

  23. I am a Bengali like mithun chakraborty. And I live in his city (and right now am talking too, from his city i.e. Calcutta)

So many mithundas came and went away. So many Anil kapoors, sunny deols, Salman khans came and went away. Each time any of them came under limelight, and the group of stupid Bachchan-haters started to shout happily at the top of their voice, "Now Bachchan is no more. Now mithun is the only king" or "...now Anil kapoor is number one" or "...sunny deol has now replaced Bachchan from top" and so on and so on. Where are those saviours of Bachchan-haters now i.e. mithun chakraborty and/or Anil kapoor & other so-called number ones? But Amitabh Bachchan is still now reigning like a Lion King.

Those same Amitabh Bachchan haters today pick up some funny & illogical points. They say, if Vinod Khanna would not leave Bombay, he would replace Bachchan. My point is - apart from only those pictures where vinod was Bachchan's co-star (namely Parwarish, AAA, Hera Feri, Khoon Pasina, and Mukaddar ka Sikandar), how many pictures of him have been proved as successful by his own charisma only?

Those inefficient jealous fools' favourite pass-time is speaking derogatory about Amitabh Bachchan (sadly, many so-called big big stalwarts in various fields, like bengal's no. 1 esteemed daily "Anandabazaar Patrika" group, actress aparna sen (who habitually praises mithun only to demean Bachchan), a group of producers, directors, some actors also, and journalists belong to the same). Using abusive words against Amitabh Bachchan has been a new trend (or fashion) to the said group of those non-achievers.

I pity them. It is really shocking to those losers, that Amitabh Bachchan has been declared most popular actor of the world (yes. The "WORLD". Not India only) as per the result came out of the polling held by BBC, which is not an Indian organization. Amitabh Bachchan is the first Indian after three Gandhis (Mahatma Gandhi, Indira Gandhi, and Rajiv Gandhi) whose statue was placed in prestigious Madame Tussauds Museum in London🇬🇧. French 🇫🇷 President Miterrand awarded him the highest civilian award of their country i.e. Legion of Honour (Legion de Honor), India awarded him the highest award in the World of Indian Film i.e. Dadasaheb Phalke, Latrobe University of Australia🇦🇺🐨🦘 has recently started a new scholarship scheme namely "Amitabh Bachchan Scholarship". All said and done, people struggle once in a whole lifetime for the sake of betterment of life. Apart from Amitabh Bachchan, I have seen nobody who showed that legendary superhero-like gutts to struggle twice in the same life, and the second-time struggle too, at the age of 50+ years, when a man generally starts to live a peaceful, restful, tension-free life.

Amitabh Bachchan is the classic example of a real man. He is the true mythical gallant fighter throughout his whole life (perhaps till date). He is the true-&-only-&-sole Undisputed-and-Undefeated National Heavyweight Box-Office Champion of India, the only national pride of our motherland since long back - from the day he conquered our hearts❤💞, he is our beloved Big-B.

And therefore, I am least bothered to know who that Mr Bashir is, and I also don't know why the hell should we pay him interest at all. Why don't we just ignore him?
